everglades outpost: April 2009

Welcome to the 10,000 Islands and the Florida Everglades

You may find landing at our 2400 ft. airstrip a test of your flying skills - especially if the wind is up - but even if it takes a few go-rounds, once landed you and your passengers will have arrived at the first airport chartered by the FAA in the state and one of the last fly-in outposts in the United States.

Our airbase is on the boundary of the Everglades National Park and located in Everglades City; the town built by Barron Gift Collier in 1924 as a base for construction of the Tamiami Trail. The city was the original Collier County seat until it was nearly destroyed and inundated with 11 feet of water from Hurricane Donna in 1960. Everglades City is known as the 'Stone Crab Capitol of the World' and every year aviators and boaters arrive to take home iced coolers filled with this rare and unique delicacy.

In 1947 President Harry Truman visited to inaugurate the opening of the Everglades National Park and many world leaders have since come to visit, fish, and explore this historic outpost.

There are experiences that you will find no where else; airboat tours, fishing expeditions, kayaking, wildlife; alligators, manatees, birds of all species - not to mention snakes and, yes, crocodiles. This is truly the last of the wild and while it does take some minimal survival skills - there are no hospitals, clinics, drug stores, traffic lights, burger joints, taxis, golf courses, or shopping malls - a visit here will fill your camera, treat your stomach, and provide a lifetime of tales for you to relate.
